TENNET XII Proper Names and Noun-to-Determiner Movement in Aphasia: A Case Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Proper names (PN) have properties that are different from those of common names (CN) and as such underlie different syntactic rules. According to one of these rule, in many languages, PN, unlike CN, do not take the determiner. It has been suggested that this happens because PN move themselves from noun position to determiner position. The present study addressed the question of whether noun to determiner movement should be just considered a formal description or rather reflects actual processing. A single aphasia case study and a group study on Alzheimer’s patients provide experimental support to the view that movement from nominal to determiner position reflects some psychological computation. 2002 Elsevier Science

Preserved recognition of familiar personal names in global aphasia.
Recognition of proper and common nouns was compared in four patients diagnosed with global aphasia secondary to ischemic left-hemisphere infarction. For proper noun recognition, subjects matched the spoken or written name of a famous person to a photograph, and for common nouns, subjects were tested on standardized and special word recognition tests. As expected, common noun recognition was sev...
متن کاملSyntactic versus lexical therapy for anomia in acquired aphasia: differential effects on narrative and conversation.
BACKGROUND Previous studies of therapy for acquired anomia have treated nouns in isolation. The effect on nouns in connected speech remains unclear. In a recent study in 2012, we used a novel noun syntax therapy and found an increase in the number of determiner plus noun constructions in narrative after therapy. AIMS Two aims arose from the previous study: to identify the critical ingredient ...
متن کاملReplicating Quantified Noun Phrases in Database Semantics
Predicate calculus treats determiner-noun sequences like the man, every man, or several men as ‘quantified noun phrases.’ This analysis in terms of quantifiers, variables, and connectives creates a major structural difference compared to the handling of proper names. The modeling of natural language communication in database semantic (DBS), in contrast, treats the functorargument structure as p...

متن کاملComprehension of lexical subcategory distinctions by aphasic patients: proper/common and mass/count nouns.
Previous research has found that agrammatic Broca aphasic patients have particular difficulty using determiners like "a" and "the" for the purposes of sentence comprehension. In this study, we test whether or not such difficulty extends to the level where lexical subcategories are distinguished by these articles. The absence or presence of a determiner distinguishes proper from common nouns (e....
